How does Defzort 6mg Tablet work?

Deflazacort, the active ingredient in Defzort 6, is a corticosteroid with mainly glucocorticoid activity. Defzort 6 works by inhibiting the release of substances that cause swelling or by changing how the immune system works.

Indication of Defzort 6mg Tablet

Defzort 6 belongs to a group of medicines called steroids. It is used for treating various diseases and conditions such as allergic conditions, asthma, cancer, rheumatic disorder, and skin and eye disorders. 

Pharmacology

Defzort 6 mg provides anti-inflammatory action by inhibiting Phospholipase A2 enzyme which is responsible for prostaglandin synthesis. Besides Defzort 6 mg decreases the release of certain chemicals that are important in the immune system. By decreasing the release of these chemicals Defzort 6 mg provides immunosuppressive action.

Dosage & Administration of Defzort 6mg Tablet

Adult Dose: Initially, up to 120 mg daily. Maintenance dose ranges from 3-18 mg/day. Dose reductions may be needed in patients with hepatic impairment.

Child Dose: Child: 0.25-1.5 mg/kg/day given on alternate days.

Take Defzort 6 as advised by your doctor. Swallow it whole with a glass of water, with or without food. Do not chew, crush, or break the tablet.

Interaction

Defzort 6 may interact with a wide range of drugs including antacids, ACE inhibitors, antidiabetics, aspirin, barbiturates, calcium-channel blockers, carbamazepine, erythromycin, methotrexate, NSAIDs, phenytoin, ritonavir, theophylline, and vaccines.

Contraindications:

Defzort 6 is contraindicated in systemic infection and for use with live virus vaccines in those receiving immunosuppressive doses.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Corticosteroids should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Infants born to mothers who have received substantial doses of corticosteroids during pregnancy should be carefully observed for signs of hypoadrenalism. Systemically administered corticosteroids appear in human milk and could suppress growth, interfere with endogenous corticosteroid production, or cause other untoward effects. Consider the developmental and health benefits of breastfeeding along with the mother’s clinical need for the drug, and any potential adverse effects on the breastfed infant.

Precautions & Warnings

Use with caution in patients with adrenal suppression, infection, history of tuberculosis, steroid myopathy, hypertension, recent myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, liver or renal impairment, diabetes mellitus, glaucoma, osteoporosis, severe affective disorders, epilepsy, peptic ulcer, hypothyroidism, and pregnancy or lactation.
